An IP address (IP stands for Internet Protocol) is a numerical label assigned to network hardware. Devices use IP addresses to communicate with each other over an IP-based network, such as the Internet.

Most IP addresses look like this: 151.101.65.121—this is an IPv4 address. Other IP addresses look like this: 2001:4860:4860::8844—this is an IPv6 address.

Through an IP address, you can find out which city the sender is in and which service they are using. With the assistance of an Internet Service Provider (ISP), you could even determine their street address; however, ISPs are by default restricted from disclosing this information to anyone.
